LLEP - Locomotive Life Extension Project # LLEP - Locomotive Life Extension Project TasRail’s Locomotive Life Extension Project (LLEP) is a major investment in the future reliability, sustainability and performance of Tasmania’s freight rail network. Backed by $15 million in funding from the Tasmanian Government, the multi-year project is focused on rebuilding and upgrading TasRail’s legacy 2050 and 2000 class locomotives - critical assets that support freight services, customer operations, and network maintenance across the state. Rather than replacing these locomotives entirely, the LLEP is about giving proven assets a second life through comprehensive refurbishment and modernisation. The rebuilds include upgrades to engines and major components such as traction motors, braking systems and generators, along with improvements to driver ergonomics, reliability and modern rollingstock standards. **Project Progress** The program is already delivering results across the network. - 2052, 2053 and 2051 are now fully operational and performing reliably in active service - The first 2000 class locomotive, 2006, is currently in the research and development phase and is expected to enter service following a 12-month rebuild program - Five legacy locomotives still to come under the broader program (1 x 2050 class, 4 x 2000 class) **A “Team Tasmania Project”** The LLEP is being delivered by TasRail employees working alongside local contractors and suppliers, making it a genuinely Tasmanian effort. From specialised fabrication and machining to component rebuilding and technical expertise, the project is supporting local jobs, strengthening regional capability and building long-term skills within Tasmania’s rail industry. The program has also provided valuable hands-on experience for TasRail teams in stripping, rebuilding and re-qualifying major locomotive components for future service. **Sustainability in action** In an environment where cost pressures and sustainability are front of mind, rebuilding existing locomotives is both practical and responsible. Extending the life of proven assets reduces waste, maximises the value of existing infrastructure and allows TasRail time to carefully assess future low-emission fleet technologies.
